UNITED WE AMPLIFY HER POWER
T HIS FALL—A TIME of clarity, strength, and change—we’re proud to dedicate this issue of Biohack Yourself magazine to a mission long overdue: amplifying women’s health. For too long, women have been underrepresented in research, underfunded in care, and underserved in wellness. In this edition, we shine a light on the women who are changing that, and the systems that must evolve with them.
At the center of this issue is a woman who embodies power, resilience, and multidimensional influence: Lara Trump. As a mother, media force, and political figure, Lara offers a striking example of modern womanhood—rooted in faith, driven by purpose, and unafraid to lead. In our exclusive feature, she shares the moments and motivations that continue to shape her as one of the most iconic women of our time.
We spotlight how biohacking is helping drive real change in women’s health, where science, innovation, and self-experimentation are bridging long-standing gaps in care, access, and representation. We also feature the powerful message behind “sHEALed”—a bold, deeply personal documentary from Lolli Brands Entertainment that honors the full arc of women’s health and champions the right to be seen, heard, and healed.
This issue is not just a collection of features—it’s a reflection of what we believe: that women deserve better, and the future of wellness depends on how we show up for them today.
Now, it’s time to put that mission into action.
Warmly,
Anthony Lolli and TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli

Biohacking Baldness
A HAIRSPAN TO MATCH YOUR HEALTHSPAN
Detect loss before you see it. AI diagnostics and regenerative care preserve, regrow, future-proof follicles.
WORDS BY
DR. ALAN J. BAUMAN,
MD, ABHRS, IAHRS, FISHRS
B OARD-CERTIFIED HAIR RESTORATION Physician and fellow biohacker Dr. Alan J. Bauman reveals how cutting-edge diagnostics and regenerative therapies can detect, treat, and reverse hair loss—long before it’s visible.
“You can lose up to 50% of your hair before it’s noticeable. The sooner you act, the more follicles you can save.” —Dr. Alan J. Bauman
When we talk about biohacking, most people think about extending their healthspan—maximizing vitality, cognitive function, and physical performance for as many years as possible. But there’s another dimension to longevity that is often overlooked: your hairspan. Just as your body and brain can be optimized through science-backed interventions, so can the health, density, and longevity of your hair.
As a physician who has dedicated nearly three decades to hair restoration, I’ve seen firsthand how hair loss can affect confidence, self-image, and overall quality of life. Today, advanced AI-powered diagnostics and cutting-edge treatments like red light, peptides, and stem cells allow us to “biohack” the aging hair follicle—restoring growth, improving scalp health, and preserving hair before it’s too late.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND HAIR LOSS
Hair loss is not a one-size-fits-all condition. It affects both men and women, it’s progressive, and its underlying causes are as diverse as the patients I treat.
-
Androgenetic Alopecia (Hereditary Hair Loss): The most common form in both men and women, caused by genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In men, it leads to receding hairlines and thinning crowns; in women, it causes diffuse thinning along the part is more common.
-
Telogen Effluvium (Stress-Related Shedding): Triggered by physical or emotional stress, illness, rapid weight loss, or certain medications, causing a higher percentage of hairs to shift into the shedding phase.
-
Medical Conditions: Thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata, and nutrient deficiencies can all disrupt hair growth.
-
Environmental and Lifestyle Factors: Poor nutrition, sleep issues, scalp health, harsh styling practices, chronic inflammation, and UV exposure can accelerate follicular decline.
You could have multiple factors influencing your hair health. And, the truth is, you can lose up to 50% of your hair before thinning is visible to the naked eye. Waiting until hair loss becomes obvious is a costly mistake—both in time and in follicular survival.
WHY EARLY DETECTION MATTERS
Hair follicles are living mini-organs that cycle through three phases: growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and rest/shedding (telogen). Once a follicle shrinks to a certain point or becomes dormant for too long, it may never recover without intervention.
Early detection allows us to:
-
Catch thinning before it becomes noticeable.
-
Identify underlying causes through advanced diagnostics.
-
Preserve and protect existing follicles.
-
Initiate therapies that stimulate regrowth while follicles are still viable.
Think of it as preventive medicine for your hair—just like preserving muscle mass and brain function, you should address early follicular decline if you’re at risk and before baldness sets in.
THE VALUE OF SEEING A BOARD-CERTIFIED HAIR RESTORATION SPECIALIST
Not all hair loss specialists are created equal. The field is unregulated in many places, meaning that physicians without formal training—or even non-physicians—might perform hair restoration procedures.
A Board-Certified Hair Restoration Physician (like those certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery) has proven expertise, rigorous training, and a commitment to ongoing education in the latest science and technology of hair loss treatment. This ensures that your diagnosis is accurate, your treatment plan is personalized, and your results are natural-looking and lasting.
ADVANCED HAIR LOSS DIAGNOSTICS AT BAUMAN MEDICAL
At Bauman Medical, we’ve invested heavily in state-of-the-art tools to detect, measure, and track hair loss long before it’s obvious.
-
HairCheck®: A non-invasive, scientifically validated device that measures hair mass index (HMI)—a combination of hair density and diameter—within a small target area. It allows us to compare hair loss or regrowth over time with precision.
-
HairMetrix™: The first AI-powered, non-invasive, real-time trichometry system. It captures ultra-high-resolution scalp images and analyzes hair count, caliber, density, and other metrics instantly—no trimming or tattooing required.
-
TrichoTest®: A genetic test that analyzes DNA variations to determine your unique response to hair loss medications and nutraceuticals, helping us personalize your treatment strategy.
These technologies are the “Whoop” and “Oura rings” of hair medicine, giving us reliable data to guide our hair-hacking journey.
“You can lose 50% before you notice. Start early, save follicles.”

CUTTING-EDGE HAIR RESTORATION & OPTIMIZATION TREATMENTS
Once we have a precise diagnosis, we can design a customized, multi-therapy plan. Today’s hair restoration toolbox is more advanced than ever, combining nutraceutical, medical, regenerative, and procedural options.
Peptides and PEPgro™
Peptides are small but powerful signaling molecules that can influence cell behavior, promote healthy tissue remodeling, and stimulate hair follicles. At Bauman Medical, we’ve pioneered PEPgro™—a proprietary peptide-based topical system with CopperGHK, Zn-Thymulin, PTD-DBM, etc. that supports follicular activity, improves scalp condition, and complements other regenerative treatments.
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
Devices like the medical-grade Bauman TURBO LaserCap®, co-developed with the inventor of the original LaserCap and his team of MIT optical physicists and Harvard photomedicine experts, deliver low-level laser red light therapy to the scalp to stimulate cellular activity in hair follicles, increase blood flow, and reduce inflammation, enhancing hair growth, thickness, and strength.
Regenerative Medicine
-
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): A no-downtime, lunchbreak procedure that leverages your own platelet-derived growth factors to awaken dormant follicles and improve hair caliber.
-
Exosomes: The next generation of regenerative therapy—stem cell-derived nanoparticles packed with growth factors, proteins, and nucleic acids—to support healing, follicle rejuvenation, and hair growth.
-
PDOgro™: Absorbable PDO threads placed undetectably beneath the skin to stimulate collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production; proven to stimulate hair growth.
Advanced Delivery Systems
TED (Transepidermal Delivery) uses ultrasound to drive regenerative compounds, including exosomes and peptides, into the scalp non-invasively without injections, discomfort, or downtime, optimizing scalp health and hair growth.
Hair Transplantation
When follicles are beyond repair, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplantation allows us to artistically redistribute healthy follicles to thinning or bald zones with no linear scar and a more comfortable, less restricted recovery process than traditional hair transplants.
Our VIP|FUE™ No-Shave technique offers a discreet restoration without shaving—ideal for those in the public eye.
Hair Follicle Stem Cell Banking
At Bauman Medical, we also offer Hair Follicle Stem Cell Banking—a groundbreaking way to preserve your own living stem cells for future use and leverage them for treatments today. These preserved cells contain a treasure trove of regenerative potential. Currently, we can culture them and create STEMgro™ from their secretome, a potent blend of growth factors and signaling molecules that can help stimulate hair regrowth. These stored cells may have applications far beyond “hair cloning” and hair restoration in the future. Banking them today is an investment in your hair health—and your regenerative future.
OUR WORK WITH THE FATHER OF BIOHACKING
When Dave Asprey, widely considered the Father of Biohacking, decided to address his own hair loss, he turned to Bauman Medical. As a public patient, Dave has openly shared his journey with our advanced diagnostics, regenerative therapies, and hair transplant procedure, totaling over 4,000 FUE grafts for his hairline and crown. His experience underscores that even the most health-optimized individuals can benefit from precision-based hair restoration strategies.
BIOHACKING YOUR HAIRSPAN
Biohacking is about taking control of your biology. With the proper diagnostics, interventions, and ongoing monitoring, your hair can—and should—stand the test of time!
Your hairspan is not predetermined by genetics alone. It’s influenced by your lifestyle, scalp health, specialized care, and the timeliness of your intervention. The sooner you start, the more options you have, and the better your long-term results will be.
If you’re serious about optimizing your healthspan, don’t overlook your hair. Seek expert evaluation early, embrace precision diagnostics, and take advantage of today’s medical and regenerative breakthroughs.
Because when it comes to biohacking baldness and improving your hairspan, Time Equals Follicles.
America’s Health Crisis
THE HIGHWAY TO HEALTH
America spends more on healthcare than but has the worst outcomes. It’s time to ask why, uncover hidden causes, and map your own path to true health.
WORDS BY
DR. TOM O’BRYAN,
DC, CCN, DACBN, CIFM
O UR CURRENT ADMINISTRATION is putting a tremendous amount of effort into bringing awareness to the American public, a cold “reality check” about the terrible results of health care in our country. I, for one, believe there is a sincerity behind this slogan, “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA), and I’m all for it. It’s extremely difficult to argue with these types of “Wait, What” numbers.
Common “coffee talk” now includes food colorings affecting our children’s brain function, that the U.S. allows 72 pesticides that Europe bans, and high levels of toxic pesticides are found in 93% of Americans’ blood/urine samples. “WAIT, WHAT”?
Ever back out of a driveway and say, “What’s wrong with this car? It’s moving backwards, but not very well,”? And then you realize, “Oh, the emergency brake is on.” Release the emergency brake and the car backs up just fine. utero to their genetic potential.
When is it ok for a child to eat food with atrazine on it? NEVER. What about pregnant women? NEVER. Atrazine is categorized as a hormone disruptor (throws your hormones out of balance) and is linked to various cancers. Many studies clearly show that maternal exposure to atrazine during pregnancy may be associated with:
-
Low birth weight and small head circumference in newborns. That means a baby’s brain does not develop to whatever their genetic potential may be.
-
Preterm delivery and intrauterine growth retardation. This means all of the baby’s organs do not develop in
-
Birth defects, including heart, urinary, and limb defects.
There are over 6,000 medical articles on atrazine and its many dangers. Atrazine is the second most commonly used weed killer in the US, and its residue is on our conventional fruits and vegetables (conventional means the common fruits and vegetables in supermarkets). “WAIT. WHAT”?
And this one is not a “nice” topic, and certainly not coffee talk, but infant mortality rate in the U.S. is ranked 33rd out of the top 38 high-income, industrialized (OECD) countries. Awfully close to the very bottom. “WAIT, WHAT”?
“You MUST be exaggerating.” No, I’m not. Very good science shows us:
-
74% of American adults are dealing with overweight or obesity.
-
Close to 40% of children are overweight or have obesity.
-
52% of American adults have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
-
30% of teens have prediabetes (this was 11% in 2002).
-
1 in 36 children are on the autism spectrum (up from 1 in 150 in the year 2000). This number is 1 in 22 in California.
-
34% of young adults have a mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder.
-
Incidence of early-onset cancers has increased by 79% in recent years. • Nearly one in two Americans is predicted to get cancer in their lifetime (41.6% chance). This is the first year America is estimated to have over 2 million new cases of cancer.
-
Autoimmune diseases are rising rapidly, with some studies showing rates rising 3-12% annually.
-
18% of teens have fatty liver disease.
-
20-25% of women are on antidepressant medication.
-
Early-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease have tripled since 2013.
-
American girls are starting puberty years earlier than they were in prior centuries, and are starting earlier than any other continent in the world.
-
Infertility is rising rapidly and unsustainably, with sperm counts declining 1% per year and infertility rates rising 1% per year.
-
The U.S. has the highest infant and maternal mortality rates of all high-income countries, despite spending much more than any other country (see graph above).
-
Life expectancy is seeing a sustained decline in the United States, driven by COVID-19, chronic liver disease, heart disease, and suicide.
-
77% of young Americans are not able to qualify for military service due to health problems or drug use.
“WAIT. WHAT?”
Want to hear the good news in all of this gloom and doom? Every one of these conditions listed above can be addressed and reversed rapidly.
“WAIT. WHAT?”
If this is true, why haven’t I heard about this before?
“We’re spending more than anyone—and getting sicker than everyone.”
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) tells us that 14 of the 15 top causes of death are chronic inflammatory diseases. Every one of these conditions are driven by or worsened by the exact same thing: inflammation under the surface called low-grade chronic systemic inflammation (CSI), which is caused largely by our toxic ultra-processed food system, the toxins in our environment (air and water), and our increasingly sedentary, tech-driven, isolated, indoor lives. This CSI goes on for years under the surface and you have no noticeable symptoms. I refer to it as the “I feel fine” syndrome. We have been misled to believe that if we have no symptoms currently, we have no health issues going on under the surface. But if we think about it, we know that can’t be true. Cancer, or cognitive decline, does not develop in a week or a month. They develop over years. But who wants to think about that? Well, now, highly accurate tests are available to identify these mechanisms of disease years before there is ever a noticeable symptom.
Much easier to just listen to the medical system, with its multi-million dollar marketing showing us how happy we can be with any condition, if we just take this pill or that potion. The actors in the ads are paid “big bucks” to look happy, be buoyant because they’re taking the remedy (?) for the diagnosis you’ve received. No one listens to the narrator in the background of these commercials as he reads the dangers of the medication. We focus on the hope of being “happy and buoyant,” just like the person in that TV ad.
So, where does the inflammation come from that is “the fuel on the fire”? There are a number of triggers. There is no one cause of disease, there are usually a number of contributing “causes” to the diseases we develop. We’d like there to be one pill, one diet, one “thing”, to be healthy and prevent disease. The easier, the better. But that’s not how it works. There is, however, one root mechanism to disease, as far as I know, to every one of them, and that is inflammation. Remember, 14 of the 15 top causes of death are chronic inflammatory diseases.
Identify the triggers of inflammation in your body, reduce your exposures to those triggers, and watch your body get stronger and healthier.
I spent 30 years in Chicago raising a family and treating thousands of patients. If you have a map of Chicago, it’s pretty straightforward on how to get around. But the map of Chicago will do you no good in San Francisco. The protocol your friend used to reverse their Hashimoto’s Thyroid Disease will not work for your thyroid problem. You need your own map, and identify your triggers of inflammation.
This first article in the Series sets the stage for the questions we need to ask, to read our own map, “where is my inflammation coming from”?
Precision Medicine for Veterans
VETERAN OPTIMIZATION PROGRAM HANDBOOK
A precision medicine approach to healing the invisible wounds of war through advanced diagnostics, integrative therapies, and biomarker-driven care.
WORDS BY
DR. MARK GORDON, MD
1 INTRODUCTION
The “Biohack Yourself” program is a mission-driven, veteran-focused initiative developed by Millennium Health Centers, Inc. to restore optimal health, resilience, and functionality in those suffering from the long-term consequences of trauma, including mild to moderate Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This program is grounded in biomarker-driven precision medicine and takes a proactive, systems-based approach to recovery—recognizing that TBI-related symptoms such as cognitive decline, fatigue, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, hormonal disruption, and sleep disorders are not isolated conditions, but downstream effects of unaddressed neuroinflammation, neuroendocrine dysregulation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
While conventional treatment protocols often focus on symptom suppression—using medications that may dull alertness, reduce drive, and introduce dependency—the “Biohack Yourself” program seeks to identify and correct the underlying biological, neurological, and hormonal imbalances that drive post-TBI symptomatology. This includes evaluating the 28 key biomarkers that reflect systemic inflammation, hormonal depletion, neural redox imbalance, and nutrient deficiencies—factors that silently perpetuate brain fog, emotional dysregulation, and physiological decline in our war fighters and veterans.
By combining advanced diagnostics with a comprehensive toolkit of natural, alternative, and complementary technologies—including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Quantitative EEG-Directed Neurotherapy (QEED), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Red Light Therapy, Hydrogen and Oxygen gas therapy, and targeted nutraceuticals—this program creates a neuropermissive environment for healing. The ultimate goal is to restore the brain’s capacity for self-repair, re-establish hormonal harmony, and empower veterans to reclaim their health, identity, and purpose.
This is not just a protocol. It is a paradigm shift in the care of veterans living with the invisible wounds of war—built on the conviction that we must look beneath the surface of symptoms to heal what truly matters: the causation. Since 2009, the Millennium has been providing financially subsidized assessments and treatment to over 3000 veterans nationally and internationally. The Millennium’s paradigm has returned thousands of injured veterans to a more productive quality of life. The least we can do for our heroes!
“This is not just a protocol. It is a paradigm shift in veteran care.”
2 PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The “Biohack Yourself” program is an advanced, integrative health restoration model that bridges the gap between cutting-edge diagnostics and non-pharmaceutical healing technologies. It was developed with a singular mission: to give veterans the tools, therapies, and knowledge needed to reclaim control over their health, functionality, and future—without the limitations of symptom-suppressing medications.
At its core, this program is grounded in biomarker-based personalization, using the Millennium’s 28-Point Biomarker Panel to uncover the specific metabolic, hormonal, inflammatory, and neurological imbalances that fuel trauma-related dysfunction. Each veteran’s therapeutic protocol is tailored to these findings, ensuring that treatment is both targeted and transformative.
Rather than offering generic interventions, we deploy a multi-modal strategy that leverages natural, alternative, and complementary therapies shown to promote neurorepair, hormonal restoration, mitochondrial health, and emotional resilience. This holistic approach empowers veterans to:
-
Optimize brain and body function by restoring neurochemical balance, reducing neuroinflammation, and enhancing cellular energy metabolism.
-
Improve emotional resilience through stabilization of the Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal axis, rebalancing of excitatory/inhibitory neurotransmitters, and support of neurosteroid pathways that influence mood and cognitive flexibility.
-
Reduce reliance on medications by addressing the biological origins of symptoms—eliminating the need to medicate fatigue, insomnia, depression, or pain when the true cause is inflammation, deficiency, or hormonal suppression.
-
Restore energy, focus, sleep, and vitality by improving mitochondrial efficiency, reducing oxidative burden, regulating circadian rhythms, and re-establishing healthy neurotransmitter cycling.
-
Enhance long-term quality of life by building a neuropermissive environment where healing becomes self-sustaining and reintegration becomes achievable.
Veterans are not broken—they are biochemically out of balance due to trauma, stress, injury, and toxic exposures. With the right tools, the body and brain can recover. The “Veteran’s Biohack Yourself” program is designed to be that toolbox.

Pet Biohacking
THE MISSING LINK IN PET BIOHACKING
Why freshly-cooked food trumps raw for your four-legged family.
WORDS BY
DR. RUTH ROBERTS,
DVM, CVA, CVCH, CVFT, NAN
A S BIOHACKERS, WE obsess over every detail of our nutrition, curating our diets to achieve peak performance and longevity. Yet, when it comes to our beloved dogs and cats, many of us are missing a fundamental piece of the wellness puzzle: the transformative power of fresh, whole-cooked food.
THE BIOHACKER’S BLIND SPOT
In the biohacking community, there’s been a surge of interest in raw feeding for pets, driven by the belief that it mimics their ancestral diet. While this approach has merit, it overlooks a crucial evolutionary fact: dogs have been eating cooked food alongside humans for over 30,000 years.
After three decades as an integrative veterinarian, I’ve discovered that optimal pet health, like human health, truly begins in the bowl. The challenge isn’t finding the most exotic or expensive approach. It’s implementing a simple, sustainable system that delivers consistent results.
THE EVOLUTIONARY TRUTH ABOUT PET NUTRITION
Here’s what most pet parents don’t realize: while Homo sapiens appeared about 50,000 years ago, dogs (Canis familiaris) evolved around 30,000 years ago from the same progenitor species as modern wolves, well after humans discovered fire and began cooking food. This means our canine companions have been consuming cooked food for millennia, not raw prey.
Dogs and wolves share approximately 99.9% of their DNA. They’re so genetically similar that they can still interbreed and produce fertile offspring. What’s really interesting from a nutritional standpoint: despite dogs being much closer genetically to wolves, the 30,000+ years of co-evolution with humans have resulted in significant functional differences. Dogs have improved their ability to digest starches (they have more copies of the amylase gene than wolves), and their entire digestive physiology has adapted to the cooked, varied diet they’ve shared with humans.
WHY FRESH COOKED FOOD OUTPERFORMS RAW
From a biohacking perspective, cooked food offers several advantages over raw options:
Enhanced Bioavailability: Cooking breaks down cellular structures, making nutrients more accessible and digestible. This is the same principle that allowed early humans to develop larger brains.
Safety Without Compromise: While raw food advocates argue that dogs’ digestive systems can handle bacteria, I’ve observed that the vast majority of food-related illness in pets comes from commercial dry food. I’ve also witnessed pets sickened by improperly handled raw diets.
Practical Sustainability: Raw feeding requires significant freezer space, careful handling protocols, and substantial financial investment. Fresh, cooked food offers the benefits of whole food nutrition without the logistical challenges and environmental impact.
“Cooking breaks down cellular structures, unlocking nutrients and making them bioavailable—a principle fueling human brains and canine vitality.”
THE MICROBIOME REVOLUTION: FIBER AND POLYPHENOLS
As biohackers, we understand the critical role of the microbiome in overall health. The same principles apply to our pets. The Original CrockPET Diet leverages the power of diverse plant compounds to optimize gut health in ways that raw meat alone cannot achieve.
The vegetables in my protocol, particularly those from the Brassica family (kale, cabbage, broccoli), provide essential polyphenols that feed beneficial bacteria and support immune function. These plant compounds act as prebiotics, creating an environment where healthy microbes thrive while pathogenic bacteria struggle to establish dominance.
The inclusion of legumes, like kidney beans and pinto beans, adds another layer of micro-biome support. These foods provide both soluble and insoluble fiber, creating the perfect environment for beneficial bacteria to flourish. The fiber also slows glucose absorption, creating a remarkably low glycemic impact despite the inclusion of whole grains.
THE PERFECT MACRO BALANCE
I’ve designed The Original CrockPET Diet around a balanced macronutrient profile: one-third each of protein, fats, and carbohydrates (including vegetables). This balance provides sustained energy without the blood sugar spikes associated with high-carbohydrate commercial foods.
The whole grains I recommend (brown rice, quinoa, millet) work synergistically with the vegetable fiber to create a slow-release energy system. Unlike ultra-processed grains that cause inflammation, these whole food sources provide B vitamins, minerals, and additional fiber that support digestive health.
The fiber content from vegetables and legumes creates such effective glucose buffering that even diabetic dogs often see improved blood sugar control on this protocol. It’s the same principle we apply in human nutrition: fiber-rich whole foods create metabolic stability.
THE FELINE EXCEPTION: HONORING THE OBLIGATE CARNIVORE
When working with cats, we must respect that cats are true obligate carnivores, meaning they must consume animal protein to obtain essential amino acids like taurine. Unlike dogs, cats have not evolved the same capacity to process starchy carbohydrates effectively.
For feline patients, I dramatically reduce or eliminate starchy carbohydrates from the diet. The recipe focuses primarily on high-quality protein with minimal vegetables, usually just enough to provide some fiber and micronutrients without overwhelming their carnivorous digestive system. The macronutrient profile shifts to emphasize protein and fat, with carbohydrates making up less than 10% of the total calories.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SIMPLICITY
What makes this approach revolutionary is its accessibility. The basic recipe requires just 15 minutes of prep time, then the slow cooker or Instant Pot does the rest. A typical batch includes three pounds of cooling protein (turkey, pork, or beef), Brassica vegetables for their cancer-fighting phytonutrients and prebiotic fiber, seasonal vegetables for variety and micronutrients, legumes for additional fiber and plant protein, appropriate whole grains for dogs (none for cats), a healthy fat source like olive oil, and essential fats with proper calcium supplementation.
The entire batch costs roughly $15 to $20 and feeds two 50-pound dogs for four days, comparable to premium commercial foods but with dramatically superior nutrition and microbiome support.
MAKING THE SHIFT
As biohackers, we understand that optimal health requires investment, attention, and sometimes challenging conventional wisdom. The same principles that guide our personal wellness journeys can transform our pets’ lives. The path to pet longevity and vitality isn’t found in expensive raw food delivery services or prescription diets. It’s simmering away in your slow cooker, creating a microbiome-supporting, metabolically-balanced meal that your pets will love and thrive on.
Friendships, Signals, and Lifespan
HOW THE BIOLOGY OF CONNECTION SHAPES HOW LONG WE LIVE
Research shows social bonds outpace diet and exercise in predicting lifespan. Here’s how to strengthen the biology of connection.
WORDS BY
DR. SCOTT HUTCHESON, PHD
W HEN RESEARCHERS FROM Harvard set out in 1938 to study what makes a good life, they weren’t thinking about wearables, blood tests, or biohacking protocols. They simply followed people. For more than 80 years, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has tracked participants across decades, seeking to understand what predicts happiness, health, and longevity.
One finding emerged as undeniable: the quality of a person’s relationships is the strongest predictor of how long and how well they live. Strong social bonds trump genetics, cholesterol levels, and career success. In contrast, loneliness and poor social connection increase the risk of early death as much as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day.
As a community, biohackers excel at optimizing what we can measure: sleep, HRV, glucose, VO2 max. But one of the most powerful levers of longevity—the biological quality of our relationships—often goes unmeasured and untrained. We hack our physical and cognitive systems. Few of us hack how we connect.
The missing frontier is social fitness: the capacity to send and receive signals that foster trust, alignment, and genuine human connection. And like any domain of fitness, it is trainable.
WHY RELATIONSHIPS DRIVE LONGEVITY
Social connection is not a soft variable. It is a biological force. Humans evolved as ultra-social beings whose brains and bodies are wired to function in groups. Our nervous systems constantly scan for cues of safety, trustworthiness, and alignment.
When we experience strong connection with others, the biological benefits are profound:
-
Reduced allostatic load: Close relationships dampen stress response systems, lowering chronic cortisol levels and improving vagal tone.
-
Immune enhancement: Positive social bonds boost immune function and resilience against disease.
-
Better sleep and metabolic regulation: A sense of social safety improves sleep quality and supports healthy glucose metabolism.
-
Oxytocin release: Trust and affiliation release oxytocin, which fosters bonding and also modulates inflammation and pain.
Conversely, loneliness and perceived social threat activate chronic sympathetic arousal. Over time, this state erodes cardiovascular health, immune competence, and cognitive clarity.
Yet, while we value friendships and family, we often underestimate how much our own behavioral signals shape the strength of these bonds.
THE SIGNALS THAT SHAPE CONNECTION
In my work on the biology of behavior, I’ve spent years studying how humans send and interpret behavioral signals—subtle cues that others use to decide whether to trust us, align with us, and deepen our connection.
Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly transmitting in three primary channels:
Warmth: Cues of safety, care, and openness
Competence: Cues of capability, reliability, and follow-through
Gravitas: Cues of steadiness, clarity, and shared value
When these signals are well-calibrated, we naturally deepen trust and connection. When they are incoherent or out of balance—appearing distant, uncertain, or overly dominant—trust weakens.
Social fitness, then, involves deliberately tuning these channels so that we send the signals that foster strong, healthy bonds.
THREE PRACTICES TO BUILD SOCIAL FITNESS
Fortunately, social fitness is not a fixed trait. It is a skill we can train and refine, much like improving HRV or strength.
Here are three practices to begin:
1 Listen with intention Deep listening is among the most powerful signals of Warmth. In conversation, give full attention—eye contact, body orientation, and genuine curiosity. This shifts both your own nervous system and that of your counterpart into a state of greater safety and openness.
2 Use silence with purpose Most of us rush to fill pauses, driven by a subtle fear of disconnection. Yet, intentional silence signals Gravitas—calm presence and respect. It allows others space to process and engage more deeply.
3 Prepare, then flow Reliability is a bedrock of trust. When you show up prepared and organized (Competence), others feel safe to rely on you. But combine this with genuine presence and responsiveness, and the full spectrum of connection emerges.
A CALL TO ACTION FOR BIOHACKERS
We now understand that the biological state of our relationships shapes everything from gene expression to immune resilience to lifespan itself.
It’s time for biohackers to treat social fitness with the same deliberate care we apply to nutrition, sleep, and movement. Start by observing the signals you send. Pay attention to how others respond. And experiment, just as you would with any other aspect of your biology.
In an era of rising social isolation, building the capacity to forge strong, life-enhancing relationships may be the single most powerful longevity practice we can adopt. The data is clear: how well we connect helps determine how long we live.
